Own AI is a local-first app. Your chats are answered by a model running on your iPhone, and we run no servers that receive them. This page explains what the app handles, the few cases where data leaves the device, and who sees it when it does.
In short
- No account, no advertising, no tracking, and no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.
- Chats, documents, memory and study sets are stored on your device. We never receive them.
- With a local model, nothing you write is sent anywhere.
- Data leaves the device only when you use a feature that needs it: model downloads, web search, opening a web page, Apple Intelligence, or an App Store purchase.
1. Scope and who we are
This policy covers the Own AI app for iPhone, iPad and Mac, its Apple Watch companion, its widgets, Shortcuts and share extension, and this website (ownai.online). Own AI is made by Tudor Turcanu (“we”, “us”). Contact details are in section 11.
2. What the app handles on your device
The following is created and kept on your device, and is not sent to us:
- Chat content: your messages, the replies, drafts, and messages queued while a model loads. Messages sent from the Apple Watch are relayed to the iPhone and handled the same way.
- Documents and images: files, photos and screenshots you attach, the text extracted from them (including on-device text recognition), and the local search index built for document answers.
- Voice: speech you dictate, its transcript, and spoken replies generated on the device.
- Memory, saved prompts and study sets: optional assistant memory, prompt library, flashcards and quiz progress.
- Models: model files you download or import, and per-conversation caches that speed up reopening a chat.
- Settings and measurements: your preferences, and the per-model speed and memory figures shown in Settings › Performance. Prompts and replies are not recorded in those figures.
- Purchase and free-tier state: whether Own AI Pro is active, and a local counter for the free message limit.
Conversation files and study sets are encrypted on the device, with a key kept in the iOS Keychain. You can delete chats and documents inside the app, set chats to delete automatically in Settings, and remove everything by deleting the app. Backups you create with the app’s export or backup features, and iOS device backups, are under your control and Apple’s terms.
3. When data leaves your device
Each of these happens only when you use the feature, and each goes to the service named, not to us.
| Feature | What is sent | To whom |
|---|---|---|
| Model downloads and model search | The request for the model’s files or search results, which exposes your IP address and standard device headers. No chat or document content. | Hugging Face, Inc. (huggingface.co) |
| Voice and speech models | The request for the text-to-speech voice file or speech-recognition model, if you use them. Same data as above. | Hugging Face, Inc. |
| Web search, when turned on | The search query the model builds for your question. Requests use a session without cookies or identifiers. | DuckDuckGo by default, or Google if you choose it |
| Opening a web page | A request to the address you typed, and nothing else about your chat. | That website |
| Apple Intelligence | Your prompt, relevant conversation context and attached document text, which may be processed by Apple, including Private Cloud Compute. The app asks before this model is used. | Apple Inc. |
| Purchases | Handled by StoreKit. We do not receive your payment details; Apple tells the app whether Pro is active. | Apple Inc. |
| Apple Watch, Siri and Shortcuts | Messages relayed between your devices, and requests you give Siri or Shortcuts, handled by the operating system. | Apple Inc. |
These services have their own privacy policies, which apply to what they receive. Model files on Hugging Face and the answers a model gives are covered by the model publisher’s licence, not by us.
4. Permissions the app may ask for
- Microphone and speech recognition to dictate messages and hold voice conversations. Dictation is recognised on the device; the audio is not sent anywhere.
- Camera and photo library to attach images to a chat. Saving an image asks for permission to add to your library.
- Notifications for study reminders. They are scheduled on the device; no push server is involved.
Each is optional. You can decline or later withdraw any of them in iOS Settings, and the rest of the app keeps working.
5. Tracking, analytics and advertising
Own AI has no advertising, no analytics and no crash-reporting SDKs, and does not track you across other apps or websites. Its privacy manifest declares no tracking and no collected data. If Apple provides crash or usage reports because you chose to share them with developers in iOS settings, we see only what Apple supplies, and nothing from your chats.
6. This website
ownai.online sets no cookies and loads no analytics, advertising, or third-party fonts or scripts. The site is delivered through Cloudflare and a web host, which, like any web server, process visitors’ IP addresses and request details in transient logs for security and operation.
7. Legal bases and your rights
We do not hold your chats or an account for you, so there is normally no personal data of yours for us to access, correct or delete. Where we do process personal data, for instance if you email us, we do so to answer you (legitimate interest and, where it applies, the performance of a request you made). Under the EU GDPR, the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection and similar laws you may ask for access, correction, deletion or portability, and object to processing; contact us as below. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
8. Retention
On-device data stays until you delete it or the app. Email you send us is kept only as long as needed to answer it and for ordinary record-keeping. Data sent to Apple, Hugging Face, DuckDuckGo, Google or a website is kept under their policies.
9. Children
Own AI is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
10. Changes to this policy
If the app’s behaviour changes, for instance by adding a feature that sends data off the device, we will update this page and its date before or when the change ships.
